Part 1. How to get your dead iPhone 5 restarted
The possible reason that your iPhone won't start:
Out of battery
System crash and require a reboot
1. Charge Your iPhone 5
This solution seems to be too easy. But it is an actually useful solution to some cases. Connect your iPhone to a power source for at least 15 minutes unless you are certain there is enough power left in the device. Your iPhone could seem to be dead because it is running out of battery completely.
You need to pay attention that some keyboards US ports do not have enough energy to charge your iPhone. So you had better link your iPhone to the computer directly. When you find your device have run out of battery and the charging won't work, check your cables or charger again. And make sure there are no other obstacles that could get in the way of normal charging. You can get another functional cable to check if this works.
2. Hold the power button and the home button at the same time.
If nothing works after you try step 1, you can take step 2 now. Press the power button and the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds. Then you will see the Apple logo showing in the screen for about 10 to 20 seconds. At this moment, release both the buttons you hold and wait. The phone will boot itself. If this doesn't work, you can try to press the Mute button a few times before this step. We don't know why this would work sometimes, it just does.
3. Restore your iPhone 5
If you have tried solution 1 and 2 and still can't save your dead iPhone, you can try to restore your iPhone to the factory setting.
This move will wipe out all the data on your old iPhone but it can fix many problems sometimes.
If you didn't backup your iPhone before, then follow the “Transfer data from a dead iPhone to a new iPhone” guidance in part 2 to get important data out first. Then you can try the restore to the factory method. You just need to click the restore button to sync your iPhone. If this won't work, then try the following:
- 1. Connect the USB cable to the dock connector instead of the computer directly.
- 2. Press the home button of your iPhone.
- 3. Now connect the USB cable you just linked your iPhone to the computer.
- 4. Thus, your iPhone will be put into recovery mode. iTunes will start and get ready for your restore process.
